The Rega Aphelion 2 is the fourth generation of Rega's handmade Moving Coil cartridges. It builds upon the original Aphelion and Apheta 3 technology, but every detail has been refined even further. The result is Rega's most precise and advanced cartridge to date.
The heart of the cartridge is a hand-wound micro cross generator, utilizing only 0.018 mm thick copper wire. The generator is attached directly to a boron rod cantilever, which is significantly stiffer and lighter than aluminum. A fine-line nude diamond stylus, cut at a 90-degree angle, is mounted at the end of the boron rod.
The body is a single-piece CNC-machined aluminum. The Aphelion 2 does not include traditional tie wire suspension or damping – all additional sources of resonance have been eliminated. The result is an open and natural sound: deep and controlled bass, rich and lively midrange, and sparklingly precise treble without harshness.
The Aphelion 2 is designed to be a perfect match for Rega's high-end turntables and is available as a factory-installed option on the Rega Planar 10 model.
The Ear called the Aphelion 2 "a true breakthrough" and praised its ability to convey musical nuances with extreme precision. Hi-Fi Choice stated it was "extremely precise and nuanced". Stereophile rated the Aphelion 2 as one of the best MC cartridges in its class.
