Wharfedale DENTON 1S - Compact Standmount / Wall-Mount Speaker
The Wharfedale DENTON 1S continues the story of the legendary Heritage series in a new way. It is a compact standmount speaker that offers exceptionally full, natural, and engaging sound reproduction for its size.
The DENTON 1S combines Wharfedale's classic British design tradition with modern acoustic engineering. It is not merely a re-release, but a completely new interpretation of what a modern small hi-fi speaker can be.
A Classic Name – A Completely New Realization
The first Wharfedale DENTON was introduced in 1967, a time when a new need for compact hi-fi speakers emerged. The goal was to offer natural sound, quality construction, and excellent performance in a small size.
Released in 1974, the DENTON 1 continued this idea with a bolder design, bringing a new, modern look to the series.
The new DENTON 1S follows the same evolutionary path. It honors the original DENTON tradition but incorporates the latest acoustic design and a structure suitable for today's listening environments.
Coaxial Driver – A Single, Precise Acoustic Center
At the heart of the DENTON 1S is a brand new coaxial 2-way system, where a 25 mm silk dome tweeter is located in the center of a 165 mm polypropylene cone bass-midrange driver.
When both drivers operate from the same acoustic point, excellent phasing, precise timing, and a coherent soundstage are achieved.
The result is an open and natural presentation, where the stereo image remains stable even when listening slightly off-axis. The sound is balanced and coherent without the seamless transitions between traditional separate drivers.
The coaxial structure also allows for a more compact and rigid enclosure, with a clear and elegant front baffle.
Designed with Music in Mind
The DENTON 1S was designed by Wharfedale's acoustic engineer Peter Comeau. Special attention was paid to the crossover's operation and the seamless integration of the drivers.
The goal was to create a speaker where the drivers do not act as separate components but as a unified whole. The result is natural, balanced, and pleasant sound reproduction for long-term listening.
Music retains its rhythm, dynamics, and detail without fatiguing brightness.
Big Sound from a Small Enclosure
Despite its compact size, the DENTON 1S offers impressive bass reproduction.
A carefully tuned bass reflex enclosure and an internal volume of 11.5 liters allow for bass reproduction down to 45 Hz (-6 dB), which is an excellent achievement for a standmount speaker of this size.
The bass response is warm, controlled, and precise. The new polypropylene cone combines a lightweight structure, rigidity, and good damping, which reduces coloration, especially in the important midrange.
The silk dome tweeter provides a soft yet detailed top end, supported by an efficient magnetic system and a damped rear chamber.
With an 88 dB sensitivity and an 8-ohm nominal impedance, the DENTON 1S works easily with a variety of amplifiers – both in traditional hi-fi systems and modern integrated amplifiers.
For Stands, Shelves, or Walls
The DENTON 1S is designed for flexible placement.
Primarily, it is a high-quality standmount speaker, but the 3/8" mounting thread on the rear also allows for wall mounting.
The Brilliance EQ control on the rear panel allows for fine-tuning of the speaker's sound according to its placement. This adjustment helps optimize the sound, for example, when placed freely, on a shelf, or near a wall.
Heritage Look for a Modern Home
Aesthetically, the DENTON 1S combines Wharfedale's classic Heritage spirit with modern design.
Rounded cabinet lines, a matte finish, a classic fabric grille, and a retro-inspired logo evoke Wharfedale's long history, while the multi-layer cabinet construction, internal bracing, and precise damping ensure modern performance.
Available in matte black, matte white, and a new matte blue finish.
