The American Car Show weekend is now behind us, and we want to thank everyone who stopped by to chat, ask for advice, and exchange thoughts on car audio.
The event beautifully showcased the strong car culture in Finland. It was a pleasure to see many familiar customers, and also to meet plenty of new customers and contacts. One of the best moments was encountering second-generation customers – this speaks volumes about long-standing trust and continuity.
This was our first ACS under the name Hifikaupat.fi. However, Audiokauppa Oulu Oy has over 12 years of experience in car audio, so it was great to continue our familiar work at the fair in this new phase.
Sami Soikko, the main person in charge at Audiokauppa Oulu Oy and a familiar face to many customers over the years, was also strongly present at the fair.
After the fair, we compiled the most common questions and answers into this article. If you couldn't make it, this will give you a good start on improving your car's sound system.
Aalto 9 garnered great interest at the fair
The Aalto 9 speakers were also present at the fair, attracting an exceptional amount of interest and inquiries throughout the weekend. This is a model from our home audio selection, manufactured in Kempele, making it a completely Finnish product.
Aalto 9 had its own small stand at the fair, and especially during listening sessions, many listeners gathered. The feedback was extremely positive regarding both sound quality and appearance.
1) Where should I start if I want better sound without a big project?
The best first step is almost always upgrading the front speakers. In many cars, the factory-installed speakers are clearly the weakest link in the system, and replacing them quickly brings more clarity, separation, and more pleasant listening.
If you want to make a smart first-level upgrade:
- replace front speakers with higher quality ones
- ensure careful installation (mounting, damping, aiming)
- set basic settings correctly from the head unit
This alone can go a long way without needing to replace the entire system at once.
2) Should I replace the speakers or add a subwoofer first?
It depends on the goal, but for most, the order works like this:
- get the front speakers right
- then add a subwoofer to complete the low end
If the high and mid-range are not in order, a subwoofer alone will not make the overall sound balanced. Once the foundation is good, a subwoofer adds the missing weight and makes listening more enjoyable even at moderate volume.
3) What kind of budget is needed for good car audio?
One of the most common questions at the fair was about budget. The good news is that sensible improvements can be made across many price ranges.
Roughly:
- small upgrade: clear improvement with speakers and basic adjustments
- mid-level: speakers + amplifier
- extensive package: speakers + DSP amplifier + sub + damping + tuning
The most important thing is not to buy the most of everything, but to choose correctly for your car, listening style, and goal.
4) Is an amplifier always necessary?
Not always, but often it provides a great benefit. An amplifier brings control and clarity to the system, especially when the volume is increased. Many are surprised by how big a difference even a moderate, correctly chosen amplifier can make.
Amplifiers vary widely in size and price. A good example from the more affordable end is the SD 400.2 – it is also very compact in physical size.
You can start without an amplifier, but if the goal is significantly better sound quality and dynamics, an amplifier is usually a sensible next step.
5) Does installation really make such a big difference?
Yes – and this came up repeatedly at the fair. Even good equipment can sound mediocre if the installation is done hastily. On the other hand, a properly installed and tuned setup can significantly exceed expectations.
Specifically, these factors are important:
- sturdy speaker mounting
- door damping
- correct crossover filtering
- tuning
- subwoofer integration with the rest of the system
That's why we always emphasize both the products and the execution.
What did the fair reveal about customer wishes?
The fair clearly showed that different customer groups have slightly different goals:
- younger demographic often seeks more bass
- slightly older customers more often emphasize better sound quality, balance, and listening comfort
The need for installation services clearly emerged at the fair. We provide products nationwide, and installations are handled in Oulu at our own installation point, located in the same building as the store. Many wish to upgrade their car audio, but their own facilities and/or expertise are not always sufficient to perform the installation themselves. Professional installation brings clear value to this need.
