The new Platinum 200 3G is a purebred 3-way floorstanding speaker, and as part of its development, Monitor Audio also released new versions of their reference series MPD and RDT drivers. The Monitor Audio Platinum 200 3G, assisted by two 6″ RDT III drivers, provides an extended and dynamic bass response that reaches down to around 25Hz in a normal room. The new 4″ RDT III midrange driver is seamlessly integrated with both the MPD III tweeter and the speaker's two 6″ RDT III bass drivers. The mid-range of the Platinum 200 3G is reproduced cleanly, offering an excellent cross-section in the most sensitive hearing range for the human ear. Vocalists' tones are reproduced with tangible authenticity and presence. The overall experience is crowned by a detailed and clear-sounding tweeter, which nevertheless avoids sounding cold, clinical, or lifeless. The Platinum 200 3G utilizes the RDT III bass/midrange and MPD III tweeter specifically developed for the series. These drivers represent the absolute pinnacle of the market in terms of their features and performance.
RDT III is a composite material that offers an extremely rigid and lightweight cone. Compared to the previous generation RDT II drivers, the distortion values of the new RDT III driver have further decreased, while its sensitivity and power handling have increased. RDT III is a cone formed by a honeycomb-shaped carbon fiber frame and a surface sprayed with C-CAM alloy, which functions as an optimal piston. The lightweight and rigid structure enables dynamic, fast, and distortion-free reproduction even at high volumes.
The mass of the MPD III tweeter is a fraction of that of a traditional dome tweeter. Despite this, it has a significantly larger active surface area (approximately 8 times larger than a traditional one-inch dome). The tweeter's response extends up to 60kHz, and all negative colorations in the reproduction have been pushed far above the human hearing threshold. The shape of the tweeter, combined with the waveguide positioned in front of it, ensures a consistent dispersion pattern and excellent integration with the speaker's bass/midrange driver.
