Focal Utopia Over-Ear Headphones (2022)
First launched in 2016, Focal's Utopia headphones are among the best headphones in the world. The French brand, committed to continuous improvement and possessing unique expertise in acoustics, has given its iconic product a new design while incorporating acoustic enhancements; most notably, a new voice coil and M-shaped grilles inside the earcups. All of the successful high-tech features of the Utopia headphones are still present in this new edition, delivering a sensational listening experience with even greater sophistication and style.
New Look and Redesigned Aesthetic
The design of the new Utopia is a combination of restraint and distinctiveness. Mirroring the aesthetic of Focal's latest open-back (Clear Mg) and closed-back headphones (Stellia, Celestee), the honeycomb grille on both the exterior and interior of the earcups gives a unique and striking appearance.
In addition to black chrome rings – which are now attached from the inside for an even sleeker look – these headphones introduce new design codes that will also be used in Focal's upcoming Utopia products. Among them, the "Yin & Yang" visible on the earcups symbolizes the perfect balance between design and technology embodied by these high-end French headphones, as does the black and red dual grille of the driver unit.
Focal's Best Technologies
Focal's engineers continue to strive for perfection in all their creations, opening a new chapter in the history of these iconic headphones. A key improvement is the new voice coil, composed of copper – for increased reliability – and aluminum – for enhanced lightness. This alloy provides a fresh character to the sound, delivering even more neutral and powerful bass, as well as softer treble. Additionally, the grilles inside the earcups are now M-shaped, following the curve of the drivers, which improves linearity and increases precision.
In addition to these innovations, the new Utopia headphones still feature everything that made the first editions so successful, such as full-range drivers with pure beryllium, an M-shaped dome, and a fully open-back design, ensuring an astonishingly authentic listening experience full of neutrality, dynamics, and transparency. Focal's exclusive patented drivers operate without active or passive correction from 5 Hz to over 50 kHz. The headphones seem to completely disappear, leaving behind an authentic reproduction of the audio signal that is unparalleled in its purity.

Utopia is crafted from exquisitely refined premium materials. The new yokes, made from forged, recycled carbon, are elegant and pleasant to the touch, while also making the headphones lighter and distributing their weight more evenly. The genuine leather headband and perforated memory foam earcups provide unparalleled comfort and softness. And finally, exceptional headphones deserve top-of-the-line accessories: Utopia comes in a faux leather package with a black thermoformed fabric carrying case and two high-fidelity cables (lengths 3m and 1.5m), allowing the headphones to be used at home with a larger amplifier or for mobile use.
